Abundance FoodRx Café
Teaching is widely acknowledged as a high-stress profession, often resulting in emotional exhaustion and a constant sense of fatigue that can often drain the energy required for self-care like exercise and healthy cooking. Like many of us, our educators in our local public school districts often encounter a unique array of systemic and environmental challenges that can significantly impede our personal wellness and healthy food choices. Research shows that time constraints, financial pressures, and workplace cultures can be some of the most persistent barriers we face.
Thankfully, the workplace culture at the Allendale County School District is winning, with a second annual Wellness Day dedicated to local district staff and teachers. Our Food is Medicine project team was happy to come out and host four culinary medicine sessions and openly talk about key barriers we're facing in Healthy Food Consumption, and a discovery of both unique and common challenges across rural communities, rural health systems and rural school districts alike,
The challenges faced by teachers closely mirror those encountered by hospital staff and rural communities, as we battle "time-poor" environments and "food deserts" where convenience often must take precedence over nutrition. But we're determined to find a way by active listening and dialogue. From the hospital cafeteria, providing healthy “to-go” options is not just a convenience; we feel it represents a strategic investment in public health and alignment with our institution's mission of healing. So how does this serve our broader community, like our local teachers and educators?
Through our 'Food is Medicine' work at the Allendale County Hospital, our goal is to help “make the healthy choice, an easier choice” locally for our all in our community. By learning how to offer more healthy to-go options, we're learning how the hospital can serve as a dependable “oasis” within our deserts, supplying high-quality nutrition for any who may lack fresh options. We already know that healthcare workers who consume nutritious meals at work report increased energy, reduced fatigue, and improved cardiometabolic health, potentially leading to lower absenteeism and enhanced morale.
At the Wellness Day event, the District staff expressed great enthusiasm for the infused waters and smoothie samples we shared from the hospital cafeteria's Abundance FoodRx Café and are already eager to have a healthy to-go Café case of their own. We're excited to start looking into this possibility together with the District AND by popular demand, we're happy to share the smoothie recipe you loved!
Thank you teachers and District staff for ALL that you do every day to make this world a better place! We're already looking forward to learning how we can continue supporting you further as an ally in your Wellness journey and supporting youth learning in healthy choices. We're a committed and loving part of your local Wellness team!
